The Midway baseball team improved their record on Friday night, posting a 9-0 victory over the visiting Trask Titans.

The Raiders got off to a quick start, racing out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Greg Nobles, Adam Butler, and Landon Dorman all crossed the plate to help build Midway’s lead.

Midway stretched the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second as Austin Raynor was moved safely around the bases.

In the third inning, Brayden Coats contributed a run to push Midway’s lead to 5-0. Johnson led the inning off, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Coats was sent in to pinch run. Chandler Williford stepped to the plate and blasted a double to center field, bringing Coats in for the run.

Midway picked up another run in the fourth. Landon Dorman reached first on a single, then took third on a couple of passed balls. He was picked off on a steal attempt a couple batters later. In the exchange, Griffin Williams took second base, who was pinch running following a single by Dustin Holland. Williams was scored on a triple by Wesley Johnson, and Midway’s lead was now 6-0.

Midway scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Midway loaded the bases after Matt Nunnery and Jake Baggett were each hit by a pitch and Austin Raynor laid down a bunt that resulted in a no play situation. Nobles was walked, bringing in one run. Dorman than sent a line drive into left field, scoring Baggett and Raynor. The inning would end with the final count of 9-0.

Midway pitcher Dustin Holland went the distance and earned the win on Friday night. He gave up four hits and one walk, but allowed no hits. He also recorded two strikeouts.

Following the game, Midway head coach Jason Fussell was pleased with the win and the progress his team is making. “This whole weak has been really good for the team. The attitude and mentality of the kids have totally changed over the last week,” he said. “Still some things we’ve got to improve on, but I’m proud of them.”

Midway’s next game is Tuesday night at East Bladen, followed by a home game on Wednesday against Union. Those games are each slated for a 7 p.m. start.
