The Lakewood soccer team was back in action on Thursday evening, hosting Neuse Charter in Carolina 1A Conference action. The Lady Leopards strung together a solid performance as they fought their way to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Lady Cougars.
After an up and down the field battle early, Lakewood netted the first goal of the game with 28:34 left in the first half, as Labria Williams fired a shot past the goal keeper for the 1-0 lead.
The game was locked in a defensive struggle for the remainder of the half as neither team mustered up any goals.
Lakewood would carry their 1-0 lead into half time.
Throughout the second half, the game remained locked into a defensive battle as, once again, neither team produced much offense.
However, with under ten minutes to go in the game, Lakewood manufactured a pair of goals to clinch the victory.
Morgan Bonner, a defender, scored her first ever goal with 8:49 left. The Lady Cougar goal keeper was playing away from the goal, allowing Bonner to seize the opportunity and float a shot over her head for the 2-0 lead.
Just a couple minutes later, Nyaisia Devane also recorded her first ever goal. With 5:09 left, Devane sent a shot that found its way into the back of the net for the final score of 3-0.
After the game, Lakewood head coach Jennifer Wuester was excited for her teams victory.
“The girls played very well tonight, especially in the second half, applying pressure to the other team,” she said. “I’m very proud of them, they’ve come a long way. We’ve got a lot of freshman and sophomores that have come up, they’re learning, and we’re having fun.”
Lakewood is back in action next Friday, hosting Hobbton on Senior Night. That game is set for 6:30 p.m.
