After two ten minute overtime periods, the Midway Lady Raiders were able to stave off the North Pitt soccer team, and advance into the NCHSAA’s third round of the 2A state playoffs.

Midway got on the board first with a Manasia Cobb goal that was assisted by Anna Apperson. North Pitt scored a big goal late in the first half to tie the game up and shift the momentum back their way as the first half drew to a close.

Although Midway had lots of shots on goal in the second half, they were never able to score. Luckily for them, North Pitt would score no more in regulation either.

In the first overtime, North Pitt scored first. Midway looked to be in trouble, until Kacey McLamb scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out. The goal came with about a minute to go in the first overtime, and sent it into a second ten minute overtime session.

It was McLamb again in the second overtime, as she scored the game winner with 6:34 remaining. The goal lifted the Lady Raiders into the third round, setting up a date on Wednesday at Carrboro High School in Chapel Hill.

“That’s a really solid win and a big win for our program,” said Midway coach Trey Apperson after the game. “We made some big plays, and Kacey was obviously huge for us in the extra periods. We have another big game on Wednesday against Carrboro, and we will do what we can to be ready to play.”

Midway at Carrboro is set for a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday. For game updates, follow Adam Capps on Twitter @ac4birdie.
