Anthony Adam Johnson, 18, of 389 Walter K. Evans Road, Harrells, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, said investigating Trooper S.B. Wilson, with the N.C. Highway Patrol in Duplin County.
The wreck occurred at 7:25 a.m. Monday, approximately one-tenth of a mile south of Powell Page Road, Wilson said.
The trooper said Johnson, known as “Adam,” was traveling south on N.C. 41, toward Harrells from Wallace, in a rented 2009 Pontiac G6. The car was traveling around a curve when it ran off the right side of the rain-slicked roadway. The vehicle came back onto the road, but overcorrected and went left of the centerline perpendicular to the roadway.
A northbound Ford F-350 slammed into the side of the car, nearly tearing it in two, Wilson said.
“He was T-boned by the truck,” said Wilson. “It was three-quarters of the way through the car. It just went through the car.”
The trooper said there were four people in the Ford and all had minor injuries. None of them were transported by medical personnel, he said. Wilson said there will be no criminal charges in the wreck.
“There was no violation,” he said. “There’s not going to be any charges.”
Along with rainy conditions, Wilson said speed was a main factor in the wreck. The trooper said he estimated the Pontiac traveling 70 mph at the time. One driver told investigators that she was passed by the Pontiac about a mile up the road before coming on the wreck scene just moments later.
