A Sampson County Sheriff’s deputy who recognized a wanted Clinton man early Tuesday morning took in more than just the suspect. He also took in cocaine and a small amount of marijuana.
Herbert Cleveland, 42, of 4085 King Road, Clinton, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and assault on a female after the deputy pulled him over around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday as he was riding his scooter back to his home.
According to reports, the deputy recognized that Cleveland was wanted for assault on a female on a warrant filed Monday afternoon. Cleveland gave a consent search and, as the deputy was checking the scooter, he discovered a pill bottle containing the drugs.
Seized in the stop was 1.9 grams of cocaine and 0.8 grams of marijuana. Cleveland was immediately taken into custody.
He was placed under a $12,000 secured bond and given a trial date of Aug. 9.
According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Cleveland has a history of convictions dating back to April 1989. Those convictions include: Speeding and driving with license revoked (April 1989); DWI and driving with license revoked (December 1989); assault on a female and possession of a controlled substance (December 1997); possession of drug paraphernalia (March 1999); common law robbery (August 2001); speeding to elude arrest, driving with license revoked and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (May 2004); Assault on a female (October 2006); assault on a public official and false imprisonment (June 2007);and DWI level 5 (March 2010).
