Man beaten, robbed in Newton Grove

Investigators with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an assault and armed robbery that took place in Newton Grove early Friday morning.

According to reports, 26-year-old Nicolas Lopez was at a residence on Ivy Lane in Newton Grove around 2 a.m. when he acquaintance reportedly began attacking him.

He was taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries and later released, officials said.

Lopez reported that $200 cash was allegedly taken by the acquaintance, who produced a pocketknife before he attacked him.

“This incident is still under investigation,” said Sampson County Sheriff’s Office’s Capt. Eric Pope.

The suspect’s name was not released and charges against him have not been filed.
