SPIVEY’S CORNER — The Sampson Middle School Dark Horses visited the Midway Middle School Raiders for a Sampson County Middle School Conference battle on Monday with the Dark Horses picking up two wins. The Sampson girls won 25-16 over the Lady Raiders with the Dark Horse boys taking their game 53-25 over Midway.

In the girl’s game both teams played well but the defense of the Sampson Middle girls was too much for the Lady Raiders to handle.

“Both teams played OK today,” stated Midway Middle girls basketball coach, Selena Josephs. “We had a poor game shooting the ball. Our defense was too relaxed in the first half and Sampson got too big of a lead. Everyone played with good sportsmanship which made the game much better.”

Robin Whitman, Sampson’s girls basketball coach commented saying, “Our girls shot well from the floor. Jordan Pietrolaj and Lexus Simpson hit some big three-pointers for us. I have to say that defense however, was the key to our win today. Our press was just more than Midway could handle today. Fortunately we had a good day shooting from the floor but we missed a lot of basket early in the game. We look forward to playing Roseboro-Salemburg on Thursday.

The Sampson Middle School boys continued on their quest for a perfect season with their win over Midway. The game was actually closer than the score indicated but the more dominate Dark Horses were able to defeat the much improved Raiders.

“Midway has really improved since the last time we played them,” said Sampson boys coach, Charles Strickland. “They played a tough first quarter but we were able to stick to our game plan and pull away from them gradually. It was a good game with good team effort and fortunately we were able to play some of our reserves in the third and fourth quarters.”

“We played a much better game than we did the last time we played Sampson,” shared Mike Buchanan the Raider boys basketball coach. “We had a good game the first part of the first quarter and were able to even build a lead but Sampson fought back to capture the lead. We just were not able to sustain the level of play that we had in the beginning of the game. We played a better team today. Sampson is the measuring stick for our conference. Coach Strickland does a great job with his players and capitalizes on our weaknesses. We made to many turnovers against a team like Sampson. We will continue to work hard. We made progress today. Now we just have to be able to sustain the high level of play throughout the entire game. We have three games remaining before the conference tournament and we will continue to improve and get ready for each game as they come up.”
