Chamber honors Smithfield plant

<p>Courtesy photo</p><p>This week&#8217;s Clinton-Sampson Chamber of Commerce Member of the Week is Smithfield-Clinton plant. Located at 424 Railroad St., Clinton, Smithfield-Clinton Plant has long been a vital part of the city of Clinton and Sampson County. The plant was opened in 1950 by the late Burrows T. Lundy with 30 employees and processed 1,000 hogs per day. In May of 2007, Premium Standard Farms-Clinton Plant was acquired by Smithfield Foods, Inc. The facility has the capacity to harvest over 10,500 hogs per day and is the largest employer in Sampson County with over 1,600 employees. The plant produces fresh pork, bacon, marinated products, loins and chops for national and international customers. Smithfield-Clinton Plant continues its tradition of serving the community through financial contributions, such as United Way, Sampson Community College, local civic organizations and local schools.
