At the board’s Tuesday night meeting, the commissioners received updates on various buildings that are in need of improvements or need to be torn down completely.
One building that the town is currently looking at for improvements is the old First Citizens Bank building, located on Roseboro St.
Attorney Bill Poole expressed that he is currently in talks with the owners of the building to get it cleaned up or removed.
In addition, the board has also sought improvements or the tearing down of the building where Sampson-Bladen Oil Company was once located. In this case, town clerk Drenda Ammons was happy to announce that the owners have completely removed the building.
Ammons added, “The tanks were removed today.”
Mayor Roland Hall expressed his gratitude for the owners of the building being able to expedite the board’s request.
He then added, “That has been an eyesore for some time now.”
Hall then asked, with the board’s permission, to allow Ammons to draft an official letter of thanks to the owners for helping. With no official vote taken, the board agreed to let Ammons follow through with that request.
In addition to discussions of condemnation and improvements, Ammons also reminded residents that the Small Town Main Street Grant Program still needs residents to attend meetings that take place every third Thursday of the month, 6 p.m. at the Community Building.
With this grant program, town leaders will be able to improve the facade of the downtown business district and possibly get more businesses into the buildings. However, as pointed out by Ammons, public participation is needed to make this possible.
“We need more individuals to show up for those meetings,” said Ammons.
In addition, she announced that the town residents can now submit photos of the outside of buildings to eventually be used for before and after shots.
In regards to some economic development that the area may experience, Hall explained that the town may be getting closer to having its own dialysis clinic due to Dr. Kent Webb submitting the application for approval of the clinic by the state.
Right now, Hall explained that Webb had not heard anything back, but could hear something about it soon.
“So, right now, no news is good news,” Hall remarked.
He also explained that construction of Kerr Drug building continues at the Food Lion shopping center in Roseboro and could be open as early as May of this year.
