The junior Wildcats battled the junior Spartans in a hard fought game but Union managed to take the win by the score of 57-51.
“Union is a scrappy, fast basketball team,” commented Hobbton junior varsity basketball coach Angelo Surles. “We just could not get into our rhythm tonight nor match Union’s intensity of play.”

Union had to rally in the fourth quarter to pull off their win over the Wildcats on Tuesday by the final score of 70-59.
The Wildcats were on fire and ready to play in the first quarter and played a strong game throughout the entire time. The Spartans who trailed at the half had to turn up the steam in the second half and with much improved free throw shooting in the fourth quarter were able to pull off the win.
“Union is a big, strong and very athletic team who played extremely hard tonight,” commented Hobbton head varsity boys basketball coach Kenny Bass. “But we played unbelievably hard tonight. It was a four point game up until the last minute-minute-and-a-half left to play. The final score is a bit misleading due to our fouling and Union hitting their free throws. Free throws were a big part of the game with Union shooting 44 to our 12 which is no reflection on the officiating but the strength and force of the Union team. It was a fantastic high school ballgame that was fun to coach and very much a typical Union/Hobbton basketball game. Much like what we played years ago. Unfortunately someone had to lose. We will keep playing and getting ready for the next one.”
Spartan head varsity boys basketball coach Tim Pope expressed himself by saying, “It was another Union/Hobbton battle that was typical of our county rivalry. Both teams were up-and-down, back-and-forth the entire game. Coach Bass had his basketball team ready to play and they did an outstanding job taking us out of our offense early in the game. We were fortunate to get some stops and make our free throws in the last minutes of the game to pull off the victory. By having four players in double figures and two with nine points each was the key to the game. Anytime you can get six of your players scoring that well you should do well.”
