HICKORY — Mr. William Lewis Packer, 92, formerly of Clinton, died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 408 College St., Clinton, on Saturday, July 7. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. in the sanctuary prior to the service. A private burial will be held prior to the services.
Mr. Packer was born in Clinton,on July 19, 1919 to William and Lossie Packer. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in combat in Europe, and in the post-war occupation of Japan. He attended Campbell College prior to joining the Army, and received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of North Carolina in 1947.
Mr. Packer spent his entire career as a wholesale and retail grocer in Clinton. He was active in the Lions Club for over 50 years. In addition to being a past-president of his local club, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Award and the Jack Stickley Award, two of the highest honors in the Lions Club. He was also active as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Clinton, and as a regional fund raiser for the UNC Alumni Association.
Mr. Packer was preceded in death by June Vaughan Packer, his wife of 59 years; his brother, Frederick Carlton Packer; and niece, Betty Juanita Packer.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky Hart and her husband, Joe of Hickory, his daughter, Dianne Umphlett and her husband, Harvey of Branchville, Va.; his son, Jim Packer and his wife, Julie of Hickory; six grandchildren, Joe Hart and his wife, Anna, Jonathan Hinson and his wife, Amy, Brian Umphlett and Nathan Umphlett, Will Packer, and Hannah Packer; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley Hart, Andrew Hinson, Dominic Umphlett, and Natalie Hinson.
The family would like to thank the staff of Kingston Residence of Hickory, and the staff of Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, for their kindness and care.
