SPIVEY’S CORNER — The second round of the Sampson County Middle School Basketball Conference tournament held on Monday, decided today’s championship round for the girls and boys. Today’s finals will feature the boys and girls teams from Roseboro-Salemburg Middle vs. Midway Middle and the Roseboro-Salemburg boys facing Sampson Middle.

In Monday’s second round the Lady Raiders defeated the Sampson Lady Dark Horses 40-30 to advance to the championship round.

Midway girls basketball coach Selena Josephs stated, “This was probably the best we have played all season. Both teams hit the floor ready to play and hustled the entire game. There was tremendous hustle and effort show from both teams. I was proud of the sportsmanship exhibited from the teams during the game. If a foul was made, members from the other teams would go over to see if the fouled player was OK. I think our determination got us the win and we look forward to playing Roseboro-Salemburg on Tuesday.”

Leaders for Sampson: Bianca Owens, 11 points; Courtney Pearsall, 8 points; Lexus Simpson, 6 points; Jordan Pietrolaj, 2 points.

Leaders for Midway: Jada Cannady, 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists; Jennifer Blackmon, 11 points, 4 rebounds; Tess Williams, 7 points, 5 rebounds; Farrah Jackson, 4 points; Reagan Warren, 3 points, 2 steals; Cassidy Strickland, 2 points; Elizabeth McCullen, 2 assists, 2 steals.

In the second girl’s game the Roseboro-Salemburg Lady Leopards took on the Lady Wildcats from Hobbton Middle winning 32-28 when the buzzer sounded to advance to the girl’s championship match-up.

Roseboro-Salemburg boys battled the Spartans of Union Middle in the first boy’s game in Monday’s second round defeating the Spartans 42-30.

The game was a battle from start to finish with the Leopards pulling off the win. “It was good to finally defeat coach Bass and his team to advance to the championship. His teams have beat me enough,” shared RSMS boy’s basketball coach Todd Wheeler.
