Sampson Community College faculty and staff welcomed the arrival of freshman students on Wednesday, July 25, for new student orientation, a process geared toward introducing first time students to the campus.
New student orientation is held each summer, prior to fall registration, as a means to help facilitate the registration process and alleviate a sometimes stressful procedure. “Registration can be overwhelming for those first time students, and our goal is to make this transition as smooth and seamless as possible,” says Amy Noel, dean of Student Services.
College officials say they are looking forward to serving first time students as well as non-traditional students such as displaced workers who are returning to school to re-train and learn new job skills. A common thread with these students is the desire for a quality education that is close to home and also affordable during challenging economic times. “A huge advantage of attending SCC is that it tends to be a little easier on the pocketbook,” notes Noel. “That’s something that appeals to everyone during these economic times. Whatever financial or personal circumstance, it is always our desire to help traditional and non-traditional students fulfill their educational goals.”
This academic year’s theme is “Destination Graduation: Begin with the End in Mind,” and Noel says this message is one that she hopes students will carry with them from the initial registration process all the way to graduation. “Our focus is to help these students get to where they ultimately want to be. Their destination is graduation and ultimately gainful employment, so we are striving to help them work toward these goals and set them up for success right from the start.”
There is still plenty of time to register for fall classes. Fall registration will be held Monday, Aug. 13 for returning students, from 9am-1pm and 4pm-7pm. New students will register Tuesday, August 14 from 9am-1pm and 4-7 p.m., and schedule adjustment continues Wednesday, Aug. 15 from 2-7 p.m. Classes will begin for students on Thursday, Aug. 16.
