Richard Corderro Woods, 21, of 1114 Asbury Road, Fayetteville, has been charged with three counts of possession of stolen goods in connection with thefts from three Cumberland County residents, according to reports filed Tuesday.
It was Bryan Tew who detained Woods after noticing suspicious activity around his home, including a strange car in his carport in the middle of the day Feb. 9. When he went to investigate, Woods appeared in the doorway, holding various pieces of Kimberly Tew’s jewelry, a Nintendo Wii the couple’s sons had received for Christmas, as well as other belongings.
Tew chased the suspect down with a rifle — which he later attested was not loaded — and called the police on a cell phone that would go dead moments later. Kimberly Tew lauded her husband’s bravery and quick actions as being vital to the apprehension of a man who had also victimized others.
Once Sampson sheriff’s authorities arrived, they found numerous items, including pocketbooks, bookbags, credit cards and debit cards, in the trunk of Woods’ vehicle and began their attempts to locate the property owners.
The have identified three, including Jessica Currie, 22, and Veronica Jarrett, 27, both of Fayetteville, and Sharron Thompson, 26, of Sanford. Two debit cards belonging to Currie were recovered from Woods’ vehicle, along with purses that belonged to Jarrett and Thompson. The purses were said to contain miscellaneous items.
Woods received $1,500 bond for each possession of stolen goods count, with $4,500 total bond given for the charges.
The misdemeanor charges — the items for each of the three cases had a value under $1,000 — have been tacked to the list of felony offenses already brought against Woods.
He was charged with breaking and entering, felonious larceny and possession of stolen goods for his part in the break-in to the Tews’ Eldon Store Road home.
He also received charges in the theft of a pocketbook from the home of Donna May Buelna, who lives in the 3500 block of Carroll Store Road, Autryville. He received charges of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, felonious larceny and possession of stolen goods in that incident.
Authorities said Buelna’s pocketbook, which contained a cell phone, debit card, cash and a checkbook, was taken from a vehicle parked at her home Jan. 27. They said Woods was captured on video surveillance that same day using Buelna’s debit card at a Taco Bell in Fayetteville and at a local Marathon on Maxwell Road to purchase gas.
No other charges have been brought by local authorities against Woods for the alleged use of other financial cards. Authorities with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and the Fayetteville Police Department are continuing to investigate.
