It’s been just under a month since the Clinton Board of Education severed its ties with Albert Kirby and his law firm, and handed the responsibility of finding a new board attorney to superintendent Stuart Blount.
Just under three weeks ago, the board asked Blount to search utilize resources from the N.C. School Boards Association in finding legal council for the board. And, on Thursday night, Blount introduced Nickolas J. Sojka Jr., of Williamson, Dean, Williamson and Sojka, LLP, of Laurinburg, as the person to fill that slot on an interim basis.
“He will be serving as our interim school board attorney”, the superintendent affirmed. “We are excited to be able to have his services and we will be working with him as we move forward in trying to find a permanent school board attorney for the board.”
Sojka told the board he appreciated the opportunity to work as the interim attorney.“I am excited to be here and I certainly appreciate all that you all do as board members,” he said.
The attorney told the board he was married and has two children that have gone through public schools. “In fact, my wife has a lot of cousins here in Clinton that have gone through the Clinton City School system, and I have always heard great things about it,” he said. “It is my pleasure to be here, and Mr. Blount knows how to get in touch with me any time you all may need me to help with this transition.”
“Thank you,” board member Carol Worley told Sojka.
According to Clyde Locklear, assistant superintendent of finance and facilities for Clinton City Schools, Sojka was hired by the board on a $500 retainer for two meetings, one being Thursday night, the other will be Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
“Then the board will go from there,” he said. “Right now it is just for the next two meetings and he will get paid $500 for attending both of the meetings.”
By contrast, Kirby was paid $150 for every meeting he attended.
