The Clinton Dark Horses hit the field Friday night with many improvements to make, but came out with an overall success.
The Horses played eight 10-minute, steady games back-to-back against surrounding county teams in the annual Pigskin Classic Jamboree.
Beginning with an average start, the Dark Horses kicked it up and played hard to the end of the game, both offensively and defensively.
To begin the game, Clinton’s offense faced the Lakewood Leopards.
Though it took Clinton a few plays to get the scrimmage started, the Horses walked away with a decent ending. With quarterback Greg Smith and running back Demontio Bryant taking charge on the field, Clinton would quickly get into the endzone to score.
The Clinton defense would the go on to battle Hobbton. While playing a decent game, it was the Clinton defensive line that stepped up their game, allowing Hobbton just a few gains. Towards the last few plays of the scrimmage, the Clinton D blocked all of Hobbton’s chances to get to the endzone.
On the third scrimmage of the night, the Clinton’s offense took on Midway. Quarterback Aaron Viser led the way and helped Clinton completed the short scrimmage with success.
Moving well throughout the game, Clinton’s Greg Smith would be the first to rush into the end zone for a attempted touchdown. Although the Midway Raider defense proved to be tough competition in their set of downs, Clinton’s offense line proved to be too solid for them to shut down.
While Clinton offense continued to show improvement throughout the night, the defense line also showcased plenty of strength, flourishing against Union, Hobbton and Lakewood in the final three battles of the night.
Though both teams would showcase their competitive sides on the field, Clinton’s defense managed to hold off Union and block Lakewood from the end zone majority of the time.
In the final contest of the night, Clinton went up against the Hobbton Wildcats, as rain trickled down on Dark Horse Stadium.
With an assist by Viser, Jamel Bell rushed into the end zone to score a touchdown.
“Everything needs improvement,” said head coach Bob Lewis. “We have not perfected anything yet, but we plan to continue to work hard.”
Clinton will open up their next game against Triton on Aug. 17.
