KENANSVILLE – The first Summer Arts Institute, a collaborative effort between James Sprunt Community College and Duplin County Schools, ended with presentations and performances held Thursday, Aug. 9, in Monk Auditorium on the JSCC campus.
The institute was hosted by JSCC on its campus for its five-week duration. Monk Auditorium became an art gallery, theater, and musical stage for the 186 Duplin students that attended the institute. Parents, families, friends, faculty and staff members celebrated in a standing room only crowd, showing their appreciation for the students and their talents.
The two-hour Fine Arts Showcase demonstrated the skills that students acquired during the summer institute session in areas including photography and publication; painting and drawing; comics and publication; creative Writing and publication; academic enrichment; recreation; culinary arts; music; theater; and dance and movement. The Showcase concluded with a play entitled “How Does Your Garden Grow?” featuring a “cast of thousands” giving a special musical presentation of songs and dances.
The purpose of the Summer Arts Institute is to encourage student awareness of and participation in fine arts. The goals are to embed the academic skills of language arts and mathematics into project-based learning activities, provide a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for recreation, allow individual students expression through artistic media, and afford students computer assisted learning in identified areas of learning performance. The Institute also provides exposure for students to a college environment
Representing JSCC and DCS were Dr. Austin Obasohan, superintendent of Duplin County Schools; Unita Knight, JSCC vice president of Continuing Education on behalf of Dr. Lawrence Rouse, JSCC president; Sharnelle Dixon, DCS coordinator Summer Arts Institute; and Theresa Best, JSCC coordinator Community Services and Self-Supporting Program.
