Clinton High took on the tough Triton Hawks Friday night for their first official game of the season and in hopes of a victory. Those hopes would be dashed as Triton edge the home-playing Dark Horses 25-21.
The Horses started with confidence in the first two quarters of the game, led by quarterback Owen Hunt, who would show the crowd his competitve yet tough side. The Clinton offense would stay on their toes to complete the game.
While the Dark Horses got the opening kick provided by Justin Parker, Triton would prove that they were not waiting to be get on the scoreboard. Triton would score their first touchdown in the first quarter, with 5:43 left on the clock.
Clinton’s competitive drive would soon kick in as the Dark Horse offense rushed into the end zone. Despite a failed conversion by Demontio Bryant, the Horses would refuse to give up. With 10:22 left on the clock in the second quarter of the game, Clinton would find their place on the scoreboard with a touchdown. The Horses would get the extra point, putting them up 7-6.
Triton then attempted a touchdown, but were flagged with an illegal shift. Clinton would then give their fans hope by scoring a touchdown with the speed of wide receiver James Evans, making the score 13-6 with the Horses still holding the lead. Clinton’s ball would then be kicked into the end zone without a return.
Just minutes later, Clinton would then find their score rising on the board once again. With the assistance of quarterback Greg Smith, the ball would find its way into the end zone on the legs of Silas Herring, making the score 21-6.
Later into the third quarter, Triton would fight its way back, moving the score to 21-12 with Clinton still in the lead.
With Clinton trying to hold onto its lead, Triton scored yet another touchdown in the fourth, with 8:27 left on the clock. The score grew to 21-18, with the visitors now breathing down the Horses neck.
Triton then ran 40 more yards on offense to complete their fourth touchdown of the night, and taking the lead 24-21 21. The extra point was successful and the visitors were in control.
While the clock continued to count down, a pass from Clinton failed on the 40-yard line and found themselves past the point of no return.
For the Dark Horses, Silas Herring rushed for 66 yards on 10 carries, Tykearion Stevens had 11 carries on 62 yards, and Greg Smith had 1 carry on 5 yards, 1 interception and 1 touchdown with 25 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Demontio Bryant had 16 tackles, Owen Hunt had 14 tackles and 1 sack, Elexus Raines had 6 tackles, and Zack Underwood had 6 tackles.
Clinton will face Wallace-Rose Hill next Friday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 pm.
