Midway’s boys put their best foot forward in their season-opening soccer game Monday night, defeating visiting Lejeune 4-2 in a game coach Allan McLamb said was a good first showing.
“Really, I couldn’t have been prouder of the guys,” McLamb said after the game. “For their first outing, I couldn’t have ask for the kids to have played any better.”
The Raiders got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Jonthan Garcia off an assist from Faustino Diaz. Garcia would eventually get the hat trick, scoring another first-half goal off a solo play and another in the third period off an assist by Chris Dixon. The final goal came off a penalty kick from Trey Murawski.
McLamb said the Midway boys showed strong play throughout the game, attacking at both ends of the ball, playing the middle well and working to get a lot of shots on goal.
“We had a lot more shots on goal than they did. We hit the net pretty hard,” McLamb said.
But the coach acknowledged that the game wasn’t perfect either. “Oh, we’ve still got some things to work on,” he admitted. “We’ve got some places to adjust with our defense, but I think by the end of this week we should have most of that ironed out and ready for conference play next week.”
But first the Raiders, who were rained out on two previous occasions, have a grueling three-game week, with matches Wednesday against visiting Princeton and Thursday against visiting Rosewood.
“It’s going to be a tough week, but it’ll be good for us as we move toward conference play,” McLamb said.
The win Monday moves the Midway record to 1-0 overall.
