They may have been in Dark Horse country Monday, but the Raiders painted in Midway blue before Monday was over, taking wins in both the JV and varsity volleyball matches.
Midway coach Heather Johnson said she was pleased with the overall play of both her teams. “I thought they did a good job. They worked hard and they gave it all they had.”
In the JV match, Midway took a strong first set lead, 10-25, but Clinton fought back in the second set to get the win 25-22. But Midway appeared hungrier, striking back in the third and final set to capture the win 19-25 and the game 2-1.
Individual scoring for Midway showed Brianna Butler with 5 kills, 1 block; Taylor Fann, 4 assists, 2 aces; Hannah Hubbard, 6 kills, 1 block; Kelsey Pondo, 2 kills; Amber Poole, 8 assists, 1 ace and 1 hit; and Brittany Watson, 3 aces.
The varsity match went to five games, but Midway’s tenacity gave them the victory. The Raider girls won 3-2, with set scores 24-26; 25-9; 18-25; 25-23; 13-15.
“We had the opportunity to let everyone play, which was good. Giving them that experience helps them as they move into conference play. Overall, I was pleased at their performance. We had some weak areas, but I was pleased to get the win,” Johnson said.
Clinton coach Jennifer Miller could not be reached for comment or team statistics.
For Midway’s varsity, statistics showed Harley Bass with 6 kills, 4 blocks and 1 ace; Jennifer Blackmon, 5 kills, 7 aces, 1 block; Jada Cannady, 15 kills; 2 aces; Farrah Jackson, 8 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces; Kaitlyn Jackson, 4 kills, 12 assists and 3 aces; Elizabeth McCullen, 12 assists, 2 aces; and Pondo, 2 aces.
The Raider record moves to 3-1. They travel to Trask Tuesday for a game that begins with the JV at 4:30.
