The games went down to the wire, but Hobbton’s Lady Wildcats, playing at home, couldn’t muster the win against visiting James Kenan.
The junior varsity lost in three, 22-25; 25-15; 25-27.
Individually for the younger ‘Cats, Melissa Gallegos had 2 aces and 1 assist; Kaley Matthews, 3 aces; Haley Martinez, 3 aces, 1 assist; Reece Holland, 1 kill; Joanna Hinson, 1 kill; Taylor Aman, 2 aces, 1 kill and 1 assist; and Carrie Oates, 1 ace.
The JV record moves to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
“I thought the girls played pretty well tonight,” said head coach Russell Jones. “We were in the games, but a break here and break there, we just were on the wrong end of it. I thought the girls played well though.”
The varsity, coming off a strong game against Pender Tuesday night, fought hard against the Lady Tigers, but in the end James Kenan took the match 3-2. By set, the scores were 25-20; 22-25; 25-19; 23-25; and 14-16.
For the varsity ‘Cats, Taylor Bowden had 7 aces, 1 kill and 18 assists; Marcie McLamb, 1 ace, 3 kills and 1 assist; Casey Hobbs, 2 aces, 10 kills and 1 block; Michaela Wilson, 7 aces and 6 kills; Courtney Phipps, 2 aces, 2 kills and 1 assist; and McKenna Smith, 5 kills, 1 assist and 1 block.
“It was just like it was in the JV game,” said Jones. We got up and them missed one and got down. I give credit to James Kenan though, they came to play tonight.”
Hobbton’s girls move to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
They return to the court Wednesday when they travel across the county to play Union’s Lady Spartans.
