Offense. It was the very thing that the Raiders displayed a lot of Friday evening in their 44-7 route over the visiting Rosewood Eagles.
The Raiders had first possession of the game, and struck quickly. Just 45 seconds into the game, Taylor Calcutt found Troy Spell down the left sideline for a 56-yard touchdown reception. Jansen Wrench’s Point After Touchdown was good, and the Raiders had an early 7-point lead.
They would never look back.
Before Rosewood knew what had hit them, Aaron Thurman had scored on a 51-yard touchdown run, and Calcutt had a 25-yard rushing touchdown of his own. Wrench made a couple of extra points to go with the touchdowns, and the lead had grown to 21-0.
Midway played stellar defense all night. In fact, the Eagles’ first moved the chains with 9:21 to play in the first half. However, they went on to score their lone touchdown on this drive, a 3-yard rush by Spencer Garrison.
After a Wrench field goal was made from 32 yards out, the Raiders took a 24-7 lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half, Thurman intercepted a Rosewood pass which led to another rushing touchdown for him; the PAT was missed, however, and it was now 30-7.
With under a minute to play in the third, Calcutt found Spell again, this time in the right corner of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown reception.
The Raiders would add one more score, this time by Jeremy Robinson who bolted down the sideline for a 46-yard touchdown run.
Coach Tommy Sloan said after the game, “It was a little better than last week. The defense played pretty good tonight, we shut ‘em down except for a couple of plays. We had a pretty good mix of the passing and the running I thought.”
Final stats for the Raiders: Offensively, Thurman had 13 carries for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. Calcutt had 10 carries for 58 yards, 1 rushing touchdown, and 2 passing touchdowns. Calcutt was 8-12 passing the ball and had 137 through the air. Robinson had 2 carries for 68 yards, and 1 touchdown. Wrench was 1-1 on field goal attempts, and 5-6 on PATs.
Defensively for Midway, Jordan Thompson had 11 tackles, and Luke Clark had 10 tackles.
The Raiders improve to 2-1 while the Eagles fall to 1-2.
Midway never had to punt the ball on Friday. They scored on every possession except two. According to Coach Sloan, “that’s pretty good.”
