Hobbton coach Bryan Martinez had hoped his young Wildcat soccer team could bounce back from its loss against Spring Creek earlier this season, a momentum-booster just before conference play opens next week.
But despite a good start, communication broke down and Hobbton fell once again to the Gators, this time in Wildcat Country, and again by 1 point. Final score 3-2.
“They just lost it somewhere along the way,” Martinez said after the game.
“We were doing everything right to begin with and then something happened. For some reason, it just fell apart.”
Hobbton was up by 2 in the first half when the ‘Cats faltered, giving Spring Creek the opening they needed to turn opportunities into goals.
By the break the game was knotted at 2.
“Our defenders weren’t defending as tight as they were in the beginning, no one was talking, and that’s when things started turning, and it wasn’t in our favor,” Martinez said.
After the break and a 30 minute stop in play because of lightning, Spring Creek hit the back of the net again, and while Hobbton came back playing stronger than they had at the end of the first half, they couldn’t find the back of the net again.
“We played a little better, but it wasn’t enough,” Martinez said.
Scoring for the Wildcats was Jose Delgado and Eber Gomez, off an assist from Delgado.
Hobbton moves to 2-2 overall. They begin conference play Monday when they travel to Pender.
