The Trojans from Jones Senior High School traveled to Union Friday to face the hometown Spartans. They didn’t go home victorious. Union got the win 27-7, but the final doesn’t indicate just how close the game actually was throughout.
The Spartans started off very sluggish and trailed 7-0 for most of the opening half. However, Dezmond Faison found the end zone on a quarterback-keeper with under a minute to play in the half, and Alfredo Garcia’s point after touchdown tied the score as the teams entered the halftime break.
The next score wouldn’t come until 3:15 to play in the game. The Spartans were driving down the field, converted on a 4th and 2 situation, and then Daniel Glover scored from four yards out. Garcia again made the PAT, and Union led the ball game by a score.
After the Trojans were forced to punt, the Spartans drove right back down the field. Union fumbled near the goal line, but Glover was in the right place at the right time. He scooped the pigskin off the turf and ran it in untouched, icing the game. Isaias Campos made the PAT.
Garcia was everywhere once again Friday night. He had 11 carries for 66 yards, went 2-5 passing for 33 yards, 2 receptoins for 33 yards, 2-2 on PATs and pinned the Trojans inside the 5-yard line twice with beautiful punts.
Faison went 3-7 passing for 34 yards. Bakeen Murphey had 15 carries for 42 yards; Glover had 5 carries for 35 yards, 2 touchdowns. Natrone Banks had 11 carries for 53 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Jarel Kerr had 6 1/2 tackles, and a sack, Anthony Cromartie had 5 1/2 tackles and a sack, and Glover had 5 1/2 tackles and 2 sacks.
“We kept fighting” said Coach Doug Burley, noting that he was proud of his team’s effort tonight. “We’ll have to execute better next week, and that starts Monday in practice” he concluded.
The Spartans travel to James Kenan next week for their conference opener.
