Clinton’s JV Horses continued their winning streak Thursday night, blanking Richlands 20-0 on the road.
Coach Michael Bell said his boys played a great game, doing the things they needed to do on both offense and defense.
“I was very pleased with how they looked,” the coach stressed.
The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter, but Clinton moved into action in the second frame, and a 7-yard Jonathan Wright pass to Tyree Peyton put 6 points on the board. Wright put one through the uprights to give Clinton a 7-0 lead.
Before the break, Dark Horse Josh Armwood picked off a Richlands pass and ran it back to the end zone for the touchdown, but it was called back and the teams went into the break with Clinton still up by 7.
The Horses broke it open again in the third quarter when Albert Deaver ran one in from 15-yards out. Wright add the point after and Clinton was up 14-0.
The defense continued to hold the Richlands, preventing them from scoring, although they tried several fourth-down attempts. But Marcus Richardson came up with some big tackles, Bell said, to stop Richlands in their tracks.
The Horses got on the board a final time in the last six minutes of the fourth period, hen Raquan Faison ran it in from 5 yards out. Wright’s extra point attempt was blocked and Clinton was ahead 20-0.
The defense continued to hold, with Armwood getting an interception to stop one run andPetyon pulling another down to leave Richlands scoreless. A final interception, this one from Hyson Howard, shut down Richlands for good.
“Overall the defense did a great job tonight,” Bell said. “They carried out their assignments well. Richlands was moving the ball pretty good, but our guys kept shutting them down and keeping them out of the end zone.”
With the win, Clinton moves to 3-1 on the season.
They play host to Croatan next Thursday night. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
