When the Clark family began their business in 1936, founding Sampson-Bladen Oil Company and then establishing Waccamaw Transport Inc. in 1939, they could not imagine the growth of their companies nor the successes that would follow. Recently, Waccamaw Transport Inc., with its home office located in Selma, was recognized for it success in safety.
Waccamaw Transport Inc. is a highly successful petroleum transport carrier, and is owned by the Clark family — the estate of the late Manly Clark and brothers, David, Giles and Rogers, who has held the title of president and CEO for more than 35 years.
Each year, Waccamaw delivers thousands of truckloads of gasoline, propane, jet fuel, and other valued commodities to sites mostly in the Carolinas and Virginia.
“A good business provides excellent customer service, an essential necessity to ensure marketplace competitiveness is maintained. However, it is also our ability to consistently achieve this important objective without compromising safety that truly elevates our performance standards,” stated Michael Mason, safety director.
A testament to this fact was on vivid display during the recent North Carolina Trucking Association Safety Management Council’s Annual Conference, held at the Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Aug. 31-Sept. 2. The meeting was well attended by various trucking representatives and dignitaries throughout the region, and it included a special ceremony that recognized select companies whose safety records were determined to be the best in the industry.
Waccamaw was the designated winner in the following: 1st place in Highway Safety in the less than 5 million miles traveled category; 1st place in Highway Safety in the local delivery category; The Triple A Traffic Safety Ambassador Award for the safest fleet in North Carolina for 2011; and Overall Grand Champion in Highway Safety among all of the trucking companies in the North Carolina Trucking Association.
Eric Pate, director of operations, shared that these awards were voted on by the North Carolina Trucking Association, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
“They are a confirmation of the incredible and determined commitment by all of our employees to establish and maintain an impeccable safety reputation,” cited Pate.
Mason shared that Waccamaw currently employs 65 drivers who travel all over North and South Carolina delivering petroleum products.
“To win the awards is very special for us. Everyone works so hard over the past few years and it is a reflection of the dedication and commitment our company has to provide a quality product and maintain the safety not only of our drivers and fleet of trucks but to ensure that the public is also safe as they travel on our roads and highways. Safety is a responsibility and it is something we and our employees take very seriously and try to pass it along to the motoring public,” remarked Mason.
Sampson-Bladen and Waccamaw Transport Inc. employs over 720 people in the counties they serve.
