A Clinton teenager injured in a single-vehicle wreck Monday when she was trapped in her flipped vehicle has now been charged by the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Hope Merritt Sheffield, 17, of 1577 Timberlake Drive, Clinton, was transported by Sampson County EMS to Sampson Regional Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries following the wreck, to which the Highway Patrol responded at 9:25 a.m.

The wreck happened on Old Warsaw Road, about four miles south of N.C. 403.

According to reports by Trooper D.M. Kidd, Sheffield was traveling north on Old Warsaw Road when she lost control of the 2000 Jeep sport utility vehicle she was driving. The Jeep ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch, before careening further north and overturning.

Troopers found the vehicle upside down, with Sheffield trapped inside the wreck, patrol reports state.

Kidd estimated the Jeep was traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 mph before it ran off Old Warsaw Road. It was estimated to be traveling approximately 40 mph when it struck the ditch, an impact that sent the vehicle tumbling nearly 200 feet away, according to reports.

Following the wreck, the Highway Patrol brought a charge against the teenager for exceeding a safe speed. Reports indicate that the Jeep was proceeding around a curve in the roadway at the time of the wreck.

Because she exceeded a speed at which she could operate her vehicle safely under present conditions; a curve. Hence, "Exceeding a SAFE speed".

It clearly stated that she was traveling at the posted speed limit when she ran off the road. Why was she given a ticket?
