The Midway Lady Raiders earned a JV and varsity sweep in volleyball action Thursday night against Trask to earn yet another home victory.
JV
Behind the serving of Hannah Hubbard, with six straight service points, Amber Poole, with five consecutive service points and an ace, and Brittney Watson, three aces, the Lady Raiders managed to cruise to set wins of 25-23 and 25-15, respectively.
“Overall, I think that the junior varsity girls played well tonight,” said Midway head coach Heather Johnson. “They played very aggressive when they needed to and they communicated well on the floor.”
Helping Midway’s cause on defense was Hubbard with four kills and three blocks; Savannah Spell, with one kill and one block; and Poole with three kills.
With the win, the Lady Raiders improve to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Varsity
Trask came into Thursday’s game ready to play and gave the varsity Raiders a battle, losing 3-2.
The Raiders picked up a solid first set win by coming out aggressive in a 25-16 victory. But Trask bounced back with a 25-17 win in the second set.
Midway unleashed an attack in the third set that led them to a 25-9 rout, but Trask had an answer winning in the fourth set in a 25-21 win.
The two teams battled again in the final set of the game, with Midway holding on 15-11.
“I think the varsity played really well tonight,” Johnson said. “They showed a lot of emotion tonight and that is one thing that I loved seeing. Trask came out and played very well, but the girls kept doing everything they could to get a win and we needed this one tonight.”
Leaders for Midway were: Harley Bass, 8 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace; Jennifer Blackmon, 7 kills, 4 straight service points; Jada Cannady, 9 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks; Sarah Jackson, 7 kills and 2 aces; Kaitlyn Jackson, 2 kills, 10 assists, 2 aces and 6 service points; Elizabeth McCullen, 11 assists and 1 kill.
With the win, the Lady Raiders improve to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Both Raider teams will play again on Tuesday at Wallace-Rose Hill. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.
