The Tigers from James Kenan invaded the Hobbton Wildcats Friday night and came away with a win. It was a hard fought defensive game with a final score of 28-0, Kenan.
The Tigers had their problems as did the Wildcats. Kenan lost 3 touchdowns on penalties which severely hampered their offensive effort.
Wildcat coach Jeff Byrd said, “I thought we played a lot better…we played with a lot more heart this week. If we had played with that kind of heart the last five or six weeks it may be a different story. On defense, we played well. They scored on three passes and they haven’t been passing the ball. They have a good running game and I thought we controlled that. We moved it up and down on them and got it inside the 20 three times, but we just can’t get that monkey off our back. I am pleased with the effort. It gives us something to work for next week.”
Tiger coach Ken Avent Jr. said, “I was glad to get a win. I thought we played good. We handled the ball well. We made some mistakes, but I think a lot of that had to do with Hobbton. They played hard and did a good job.”
James Kenan had the ball first. They started at their 38-yard line and marched it 62 yards for a score. The score came on a 49-yard pass play from Gregory Washington to James Owens. Max Hernandez kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead just over a minute into the first half.
Hobbton had their chance but couldn’t do much with it. Kenan turned the ball around but was stopped with 4:54 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats tried it again attempting a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Eli Escalara’s kick went wide left.
The next score came with 8:07 left in the half when Dominique Barnes connected with Marcelias Sutton on a 64-yard pass play to raise the score to 13-0. Hernandez’s point after made it 14-0.
The Wildcats, on their next possession, were threatening when Thomas Owens, intercepted a Wildcat pass at the 2-yard line and ran it back 98 yards. However, a penalty called it back and the Tigers had to start deep in the their own territory.

The Wildcats had first chance after the break but were unable to move the ball. Kenan turned the ball around on their 38-yard line after a long Escalara punt. With 5:38 left in the third, Washington connected with Sutton on a 45-yard pass play to raise the score to 21-0 with Hernandez’s kick.
Kenan scored the final time with 1:57 left in the game on a 1-yard dive up the middle by Shaquille Williams. Hernandez kicked the point after for the final of 28-0, Kenan.
For the Wildcats, Charles Chestnutt had 15 carries for 81 yards. Rashad Davis had 43 yards on 10 attempts. The Wildcats had 146 yards on 41 attempts.
Hobbton travels to Union next week. Game time is 7:30.
