Union coach David Ameen said it felt like deja vu on the Spartan field Wednesday afternoon as his Spartans got yet another come-from-behind win, this time over cross-county rival and touch opponent Midway. Final score was 4-3.

“It felt weird in a way, good in another,” Ameen said of the win which, in many ways, mimmicked the Spartans’ win Monday at Trask, where they game from behind in the second half to secure the win.

“Passing-wise, we still have room for improvement,” Ameen stressed, “but as far as battling back and not giving up, we are at 100 percent.”

Ameen also saved praise for their opponent, saying Midway was a great soccer team. “Honestly, they gave us a fit, particularly in that first half. We didn’t know how to get around them. They were bringing it at us on both ends of the field. They have a strong, quick team.”

But in the second half, the Spartans made some adjustments and found a way to get the scores they needed.

Union scored once in the first. Yoni Martinez hit paid dirt with an assist from Ceza Cardinas.

Then in the second half, Chayenne Lopez got a goal, assisted by Isaias Campos. Campos followed with a goal of his own, this one assisted by Mauricio Amaya.

The final goal from the Spartans came from Martinez, assisted by Campos.

Midway coach Allan McLamb was disappointed in the loss. “When you’re up 3 to 1, it’s simply unacceptable to allow a team to come back like they did. That’s not to take anything away from Union; they played a good game; they played hard and they saw our weaknesses and capitalized on them.”

Scoring goals for Midway were Trey Marowski off an assist by Jimmy Blackmon; Blackmon with an assist from Matt McLamb; and Jonathan Garcia.

With the win, Union moves to 4-3-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the conference. They travel to Lakewood Monday for a 5 p.m. game.

Midway moves to 4-0-2 in the conference and 8-4-2 overall. The Raiders play host to Hobbton Monday. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
