Clinton showed its mettle Thursday night, taking down 4A powerhouse Jack Britt 2-1 in a soccer match at Darkness Stadium.

Playing its third game this week, the Horses faced off against the Buccaneers in a game, coach Brad Spell said, was meant to prepare his team for the coming playoffs.

“Jack Britt is a quality team, and I want my guys to play teams like that, particularly 4A teams, to get them prepared. Win or lose, when you go up against powerful teams like that, you improve your game.”

The coach said playing strong teams like the Buccaneers helped strengthen the Horses as they enter the last half of the conference season.

“Our conference is one of the toughest around; games like this just help us get ready.”

Spell said the win was a solid one for Clinton. “The guys played a good game tonight. They played tough.”

Dark Horse Wil Pearson got both Clinton’s goals, one on an assist from Kenan Lanier, the other with an assist from Weston Locklear.

The win moves Clinton’s overall record to 10-4-1; they remain 5-0-1 in the conference.

The Horses are tied for first in the conference with Topsail and ranked seventh in the state.

They return to conference play next Wednesday in a game against Richlands.
