The Hobbton High Lady Wildcats split with the visiting Union Spartans in volleyball action Thursday night, with both teams giving the Newton Grove crowd plenty of action.

JV

The Lady Spartans opened up an early lead against the hometown Wildcats and never looked back, beating Hobbton in solid form in two games, 25-5 and 25-9.

“We are still working hard to figure everything out,” said Hobbton head coach Russell Jones. “We play good in spurts, but we just haven’t been able to put it all together yet.”

Leaders for the Wildcats were: Melissa Gallegos, 1 assist; and Reese Holland, 1 kill.

With the loss, Hobbton falls to 2-14 and 0-10 in the conference.

Varsity

The Hobbton Wildcats team rebounded by beating Union 3-0 (25-12; 25-14; and 25-23) in the varsity game that followed. Taylor Bowden (4 aces; 1 kill; 16 assists and 12 digs) and Marcy McLamb (1 ace; 3 kills; 3 assists; and 10 digs) led the charge for the Lady Wildcats.

“A win is a good win,” said Jones. “I thought the girls played a pretty well-rounded game tonight. They distributed the ball well … I thought it was a good night all around.”

Union assistant coach Candice Bizzell said that the varsity battle was a good one. “I thought it really was a good game,” she said. “It was really close in that third game and could have went either way. I thought the upperclassmen really played good tonight.”

It was Union’s third conference loss of the season, Bizzell said.

Leaders for Hobbton were: Casey Hobbs, 4 aces, 9 kills, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 8 digs; Michaela Wilson, 4 aces, 5 kills, 1 assists, 3 digs; Courtney Phipps, 5 aces, 2 kills, 3 assists, 8 digs; McKena Smith, 2 aces, 7 kills and 7 digs; Haley Evans, 4 digs.

Stats for Union were not provided.

With the win, Hobbton improves to 8-8 overall and will play again Tuesday at Trask.
