The Clinton Dark Horses got a solid Homecoming night win over the visiting Swansboro Pirates, routing them 54-28.
Not bothering to begin slow, the Pirates scored their first touchdown literally seconds into the first quarter.
With 11:42 minutes left on the clock, the Horses would shake that quick touchdown off and begin to work their way down to the end zone, getting their own points on the scoreboard. The score was knotted at with 9:17 minutes left.
Then the Horses recovered a fumble, and began working themselves back down field.
With two complete passes and gaining plenty of yards, Clinton’s Tykearion Stevens would then complete a touchdown. With the PAT good, the Horses were up 14-7 with 5:38 minutes left in the first quarter.
Clinton’s defense held the Pirates to downs on their next possession and then, when they took control, the Horses would tear down the field, again, with Silas Herring gaining yardage on plays.l
Stevens scored the third touchdown of the night, putting Clinton up by two touchdowns and there was only a few minutes ticked off the second quarter clock. .
The Pirates, however, would not give up, and they scored their second touchdown of the night on a TD by Deandre Thompkins, and the score was 21-14, Clinton.
With just over a minute until the half, Herring would score yet another touchdown for Clinton, making the score 28 -14. The Pirates refused to be denied as well, and found their way into the end zone once more before the break, and the Horses headed to the locker room with a 28-21 lead.
With a grand halftime show and the crowning of Clinton’s new Homecoming Queen Tamara Murphy, the Dark Horses would return to the field ready to secure the win.
And secure it they did.
The Pirates would start the third quarter as they did the first, with a TD, but it would be the last time they found the end zone in the game.
Tied at 28, Clinton turned on the juice, scoring yet another touchdown to put them up 34-28.
Later Spence Jacobs would then shove his way through a swarm of Pirates to score a another Clinton touchdown. While the crowd cheers, the scoreboard climbed to 40-28, Horses.
Clinton got another TD in the fourth, leaving Swansboro to only sit back and watch as they gained yardage on the ground and in the air.
For a while, both defenses held, but then Demontio Bryant put edge Clinton’s score higher on the scoreboard with one more touchdown. With 4:04 minutes left in the game, the Horses had the lead 54-28.
On rushing, Tykearion Stevens had 25 carries for 181 yards, Silas Herring had 6 carries for 100 yards, Demontio Bryant had 9 carries for 100 yards, and Spencer Jacobs had 5 carries for 46 yards. On passing, Greg Smith had 2 for 2 with 19 yards.
Receiving, Silas Herring had 1 catch for 15 yards and Owen Hunt had 1 catch for 4 yards. On defense, Owen Hunt had 8 tackles and 1 sack, Elexus Raines had 5 tackles, Jacob Smith had 5 tackles and 1 sack, Zach Underwood had 4 tackles, Kris Royal had 4 tackles, and Kenneth Ford had 4 tackles also.
Clinton will play their next game Oct. 5, at 7:30, against Topsail at home.
