Although it was originally scheduled to take place next week, the fourth annual Harvest Train celebration will now roll through Roseboro on Nov. 13 instead.
“Typically, this event takes place in October,” explained Mayor David Alexander. “And this one was supposed to take place this week (Oct. 3), but the members of the Main Street Committee had some scheduling conflicts with some of our guest speakers and the groups that were involved. They (the Main Street Committee) wanted to have a date where everyone could participate and this one will allow that to happen.”
The much anticipated event will take place Nov. 13 in Roseboro Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“It is a great event,” the mayor attested. “It is a great time for people to get together and have a great time.”
Harvest Day began in Roseboro as a way to not only bring the community together, but to help those in need. Last year, event officials ceased giving out necessities for needy families and focused, instead, on celebrating the community.
“It is a good way for people to come out, fellowship and have a lot of fun,” said one of the event’s organizers, Richard Barefoot. “We will be doing a lot of the same things this year, and we are hoping to have a big turnout like we did last year.”
Barefoot said the event will kick off with the Harvest Train Parade, and the park will be filled with vendors, food, special guest speakers and games for the kids.
“We are hoping for at least 350 people out there this year,” he predicted. “We will have a lot going on, and we want to get a lot of people excited about our parade that has kicked off the event every year. We always have a good turnout for the parade and we want to get as many of our locals in as we can involved with the entire event.”
The event works many levels,as well, noted Barefoot.
“It gets our community involved, not just with the event but also with neighbors communicating and fellowshipping with each other,” he said. “It is getting everyone involved in their community. It also gives us a chance to show off what we have going on here in this community to visitors, which is a great thing.”
By postponing the date of the event, the Main Street Committee will have more time to rally volunteers, food vendors and more games for the youngsters.
“It will give us a chance to have another Main Street Committee meeting and get even more people involved,” added Barefoot. “It is such a special event for us and we want to make it special for everyone who participates or attends it.”
That meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Roseboro Community Center. The public is welcomed to attend.
At that meeting a final line-up for speakers and performers will be discussed.
