Coming off a tough week, that saw three players out and a difficult loss last Wednesday, Midway took on its cross-county rival with a determination coach Allan McLamb was happy to see. And it paid off, the Raiders got the 3-2 conference win.
“The guys played a terrific game,” McLamb said. “I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys. I couldn’t have asked for them to play any better.”
The Raiders started off a little slow, and Hobbton took advantage, finding the back of the net and taking a 1-0 lead into the half.
But Midway, playing on their home turf, were not ready to give up. In fact, they did just the opposite, putting on the heat at both ends of the field.
“We gave up another goal during the second half, but the guys were able to adjust and play the kind of soccer I know they are capable of doing,” McLamb said. “They didn’t let that goal bother them; they just shook it off and kept on playing.”
Raider Trey Marowski got Midway’s first score in the second half. Alex Boggs hit pay dirt next, followed by teammate Jimmy Blackmon.
McLamb gave a lot of credit for the win to Midway’s “back wall.”
“Those guys, G, David, Mike, Tony and Juan, really played a good game. I give all the credit to them,” McLamb said.
After setbacks last week, McLamb said the win was just the momentum builder his team needed.
“We had it tough last week. We lost three guys. We came back knowing we had to make some adjustments, and these guys did just that. They really stepped up in a big way and it made a difference.”
Midway’s record moves to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.
They host Trask Wednesday in a 6 p.m. game.
Hobbton’s stats were not available at press time and coach Bryan Martinez could not be reached for comment.
