After a shaky start, Hobbton Middle rallied to defeat Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School 3-1 in volleyball action Tuesday night. According to Hobbton coach Chip Pollock, “Both teams seemed a little nervous at the start and couldn’t hold the serve. It wasn’t pretty initially, but once the teams settled in, it was a hard fought contest.”
After trading serves for the better part of the first set, Hobbton’s Caitlyn Stegal gave the Wildcats the lead for good en route to a 25-14 win.
The Leopards were undaunted and took the second set 25-21 behind a solid team effort. “We were able to keep things close but just couldn’t find a solution to their cohesive play,” Pollock said.
The evenly matched play continued in the third set with Hobbton distancing themselves at the end behind the serving of Denise Lamb for a 25-20 final.
In the fourth and final set, Hobbton’s experience took over and resulted in the Wildcats pulling away 25-6.
“This was a very big win for us. R-S is always very athletic and well coached. We knew that getting a win wouldn’t be easy, but the girls stayed focused, played hard and we got the victory,” Pollock stated.
“I was very pleased with the play of both of our captains, Makenzie Williams and Nina Devone, as well as outstanding contributions from Alona Rhodes, Maddy Roesch, Megan Parker, and Madison Warren. Their play, paired with the serving of Lamb and Sarah Daughtry, made all the difference,” Pollock said.
The 2-1 Wildcats host Union on Thursday while the Leopards are idle.
