Hobbton’s boys put their best foot forward, particularly in the second half, to put themselves back in the win column Wednesday night, shutting out Pender 6-0 in a home match.
Although the Wildcats played a bit sluggishly in the first half, scoring only 1 goal, the team that came out after the break was the one coach Bryan Martinez said he recognized.
“In the first half, the guys were playing a little down, you know coming off those back-to-back losses and all. But at the break, I gave them a little talk and when they got back on the field, I saw that spark,” Martinez said.
“They stepped it up and we took it to Pender the way we are supposed to.”
Eber Gomez had a stellar performance, finding the back of the net four times, one with an assist from Alexandeer Sandoval.
Also scoring for Hobbton was Ivan Menudo and Jonny Velardo. Gomez also had an assist.
Martinez said he was well pleased with the way his team played, especially in the second half. “They looked good. They were passing well, and they were putting their heart into the game. That’s the way I like to see them play.”
Hobbton, now ranked second in the Tri-County Conference behind Wallace-Rose Hill, is 6-2 in conference play and 8-4 overall.
They host the Tigers of James Kenan Monday afternoon in a game that begins at 5 p.m.
