Rain stopped them from playing Monday, and James Kenan tried hard to shut down Hobbton when they finally met Tuesday afternoon, but the Wildcats wouldn’t have it, taking it to the Tigers in their den and getting the comeback victory 4-3.

“It was a great game,” said an elated Hobbton coach Bryan Martinez.

Hobbton, now ranked second in the Tri-County Conference behind powerhouse Wallace, started the match sluggish, with the boys, Martinez said, unable to find each other like they should.

“We weren’t communicating well and James Kenan was all over us.”

Kenan scored all 3 of its goals in the first half, and it looked like Hobbton would go into the break down by 3, but the ‘Cats, off the foot of Eber Gomez, found the net just before time elapsed to make it 3-1. The assist came from Jose Delgado.

When the ‘Cats returned to the field for the second period, it was a different Hobbton team — more energized, more determined and communicating with one another the way Martinez wanted to see them play.

The end result — the ‘Cats shut down James Kenan and, at the same time, ramped up their own offense, hitting pay dirt three more times to get the win.

Gomez got the hat trick, scoring two more goals in the second half, one off an assist from Delgado. Then Delgado got his own score, assisted by Bertin Velardo.

“We turned it on in the second half and played the way I want them to play every game,” Martinez said.

Hobbton’s road win moves the ‘Cats to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

They return to the field Wednesday to host cross-county rival Union in a 5 p.m. game.

“It’ll be another tough game,” Martinez said.
