A 16-year-old Clinton girl was in critical condition at UNC Hospitals late Monday evening, following a two-vehicle collision earlier that afternoon at the corner of Parker Memorial and Honeycutt roads, some five miles from U.S. 421.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper David Kidd said Monday night that Samantha Eulalia Sabourin was airlifted to the Chapel Hill facility after her vehicle was struck by Ford Expedition which reportedly ran a stop sign.

The teen was traveling west on Parker Memorial Road in a Pontiac Sunfire when she was hit by the Expedition, driven by Jonathan Blackman Crumpler, of 101 N. Sixth Street, Erwin.

His age was not known.

According to Kidd, Crumpler ran the stop sign at the intersection of Honeycutt and Parker Memorial roads, Sabourin was ejected from the vehicle and “thrown in to a canal ditch.”

Neither driven had passengers in their vehicles.

Sabourin has been listed as critical, Crumpler injuries were said to be minor. Charges are pending.
