What started as a vehicular hit and run in a Clinton parking lot ended with the arrest of a 48-year-old Clinton man who tried to outrun police, driving through yards first and then, eventually, trying to avoid officers on foot.
Neither worked. Within a few minutes of Romeo McPhail’s attempt to jump from his vehicle on Stetson Street he was apprehended by Clinton police and taken into custody, charged with a laundry list of offenses.
McPhail, under $10,000 secured bond, now faces charges of driving while impaired, felony speeding to elude arrest, resist, obstruct and delay and myriad traffic offenses.
The incident happened around 11:35 p.m. Sunday night when an off-duty police officer, working at Wingz on Northeast Boulevard, attempted to stop a vehicle that had just hit another in a private parking lot and then left the scene.
The suspect, believed to be McPhail, led the off-duty detective on a high-speed chase that ended on Stetson Street, but not before he jumped from the vehicle and tried to flee on foot, leaving his vehicle in gear.
The vehicle, Clinton police reports show, rolled into a building at 306 Stetson St., causing damage to it. McPhail, of 317 Stetson St., was apprehended moments later and charged.
In all, there was $1,000 damage to the vehicle struck in the parking lot, another $500 damage to the building and assorted other damage caused when McPhail reportedly sped through residential yards in an attempt to get away from officers.
