The Raiders traveled to Union on Senior Night Friday evening to try to get back into the winner’s circle, but the Spartans had something to say about that. The 13 Spartan seniors and their teammates wanted this game badly, and they got it, 18-9.
Both teams scored short rushing touchdowns in the first half — Daniel Glover for the Spartans, and Atlantis Warren for the Raiders.
Union made a huge goal line stand as time expired in the first half to keep the score tied at six, and giving them much needed momentum entering the second half.
Early in the second half, Justin Thompson picked off a pass from Alfredo Garcia, and put the Raiders into Spartan territory. The drive resulted in a Jansen Wrench field goal from 27 yards out to give the Raiders a 3-point lead with 6:54 to play in the third quarter.
The Spartan defense would not allow any more points by the Raiders.
Dezmond Faison quickly scored on a 43-yard rushing touchdown to give the Spartans a 3-point lead, after the 2-point conversion failed. Then, after a Raider turnover, Faison exploded again for a touchdown, this time from 35 yards. The Spartans now had a commanding 18-9 lead, and never looked back. The seniors had their final home victory, and were proud of it.
Final stats for Union included Bakeem Murphey’s 8 carries for 96 yards, and Faison, who had 8 carries for 117 yards. Natrone Banks had 6 carries for 51 yards, and Daniel Glover had 9 carries for 45 yards.
Defensively, Jarel Kerr and Aaron Sanchez had 9.5 tackles, and Anfrenee Cromartie had 8 for the Spartans.
For Midway, Aaron Thurman led the way with 22 carries for 84 yards, while Atlantis Warren had 15 carries for 81 yards.
Defensively, Jordan Thompson, Cody Baker, and Luke Clark had 6 tackles, while Troy Spell led the Raiders in tackles with 7.
Coach Doug Burley of Union said he was happy for the team and especially the seniors. He said that he would miss every single one of them. “I knew when I saw tears in their eyes before the game how badly they wanted it, and they got the job done.”
Midway hosts their rival, the Hobbton Wildcats next Friday, while the Spartans travel to Lakewood for a regular season-ending battle with the Leopards.
