Raiders will return to state Cross Country meet

For the second consecutive year, the Midway boys cross country team will compete in the state Cross Country meet at Kernersville. The Raiders finished third Saturday in the Mideast Regional held at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary.

The Raiders were the top traditional public school, finishing behind the North Carolina School of Science and Math and Voyager Academy. Both schools are located in Durham. The 4th place team was Franklin Academy. The top 4 teams in each region get bids to the state meet.

Brothers Chatham and Dayton Ellwanger finished first and second individually with times of 17:19 and 17:20 respectively. Both are students at the Science and Math school, which boasted 6 of the top 12 runners.

For Midway, Caleb Sanders claimed 8th place with a time of 17:58. His teammate Michael McLamb took 9th, 6 seconds later. Heath Smith came in 18th. He posted a time of 18:50. Alex Boggs was 24th. His time was 19:22. Rounding out the Raiders’ top 5 was Dalton Butler. He took 26th in 19:30. The top 5 finishing spots added together determine the team score, the lower the better. Midway finished with 85 points. The first place team tallied 22.

Ritchell Cousar and Alex Bradley also competed for the Raiders, finishing 38th and 39th. There were 86 runners in the race

The state meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The first place girls team was Franklin Academy. The School of Science and Math took 2nd, followed by Raleigh Charter. The Princeton Lady Bulldogs took the 4th spot for the state meet.

Hannah Zenker of Franklin Academy took the top spot with a time of 19:37. Abby Rubio of Princeton and Grayson Collins of Goldsboro were 8th and 9th respectively. They were the only runners in the top 16 from traditional public schools. 68 young ladies participated in the meet.

Midway’s best finisher was Brianna Butler with a time of 27:28. Lady Raider Kimberly O’Brien finished in 28:14. The remaining Lady Raiders were Ashlyn Warren, Zakia Douglas, and Reagan Warren.
