UNION — Union Middle School kicked off their softball season on Thursday against the Midway Middle Lady Raiders and had to go into extra innings to earn the 4-2 victory over Midway.

The game went into nine innings before the Lady Spartans could break the tie and get the win. Megan Smith pitched the whole nine innings for Union allowing 3 hits and striking out 23 batters. Midway Middle’s pitcher also went the distance and struck out 22 Spartans.

“This was a good start of the season for both teams,” shared Union Middle softball coach Robert Hill. “A lot of young girls learned about the game and what to do today. Midway has a good team and I was pleased with the sportsmanship shown by both teams.”

Leaders for Union: Megan Smith, 2/2, 3 runs, double, triple, 2 walks; Jana Lee Edge, 2/3; Deja Johnson, 1/4, 1 run.

The Lady Raiders will host Hobbton Middle and Union Middle will host the Lady Leopards from Roseboro-Salemburg on Monday. Game time is 4 p.m.
