Midway’s girls fell on the road to rival Rosewood Friday night, losing 63-40.
But despite the loss, Midway coach Jennifer Honeycutt saw some good play from her Lady Raiders.
“There were areas we needed to work on, but overall I thought they played a pretty good game. Kaitlyn Jackson did a tremendous job, and Haley Beasley came off the bench and stepped up for us in a big way. She led the team with 8 rebounds.”
But one Rosewood player became the thorn in the Raiders’ side, scoring 33 of the team’s total 63 points. Although the Raiders found a way to defend her shots in the second half, she got the best of them for the better part of the first half
“They had one girl that was really getting out in front of us and doing most of their scoring. In the first half, she had 22 points by herself,” Honeycutt stressed.
“Kaitlyn did a good job of shutting her down in the second half, though. We only allowed her to score 11 points. When we meet them again next week, I think we’ll be better prepared.”
The Raiders, the girls’ coach stressed, did a better job from the charity stripe, but still weren’t where she wants them to be.
“There were some little things that we need to work on. We’ll go over them in practice as we get ready for next week,” Honeycutt pointed out.
Leading the way for Midway Friday night was Jennifer Blackmon who scored 6 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Jackson had 6 points and 9 rebounds; and Morgan Tew had 5 points and 8 rebounds.
Chakerria Rhodes, a JV player, was called up to play in place of a varsity Raider and, Honeycutt said, proved to be an asset to the team. “Her defensive play was outstanding. She came up with a huge block; she just did a great job tonight.”
Midway’s girls move to 1-3 overall. They host Princeton Tuesday night.
