HARRELLS — The tradition that has continued for two decades will once again cause the citizens of Harrells to lift their voices in the night to celebrate Christmas.The small town of Harrells will once again hold its annual Singing Around the Christmas Tree celebration in two weeks.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18 and last until 8 p.m. It is a free event for the entire family.
According to Cindy Ezzell, town clerk, “We just have a good time gathering around and celebrating the season in an old-timey small town time manner. It is a tradition that was started years ago in our town to help unite everyone and celebrate the Christmas holidays as one community,” shared the clerk.
Anyone who has memories of a small town country Christmas should attend, organizers say because this is the same kind of event, one designed for the entire family. There will be refreshments and children getting their picture taken with Santa, and singing — lots of it. The Christmas Tree is across the street from the volunteer fire department training building in Harrells. That is where the activities will take place.
Another part of the festivities is the home decorating contest. Prizes of $75 for first, $50 for second, and $25 for third place will be awarded.
“The house decorating contest seems to be a popular event each year. Anyone within the town limits is eligible to participate. We do the judging for both lighted and non-lighted decorations,” shared Ezzell.
The judging for this year’s contest will be done on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, both in the day and the evening so that both lighted and non-lighted decorations can be fairly judged.
“The Annual Christmas Decoration Contest is a huge part of the evening’s gala . Prizes are awarded for first, second and third places respectively,” explained Ezzell. “All you have to do is decorate.”
The clerk explained that a secret judge goes throughout the entire town, choosing the winners.
“It is just an old-fashioned get-together where everyone will can come together to help celebrate the true reason for the Christmas season and also have a great time being with each other. We encourage everyone to come out and help us sing a few carols, enjoy the great food, talk with Santa and enjoy being together,” noted the town clerk.
The festivities will begin with the singing of carols and lighting of candles around the Christmas tree. After the time of song, everyone moves inside for refreshments.
“It will probably be cold and I plan to have plenty of hot chocolate available,” laughed Ezzell.
Santa then comes in on a fire truck and the children will spend time with him, a perfect photo opportunity for the parents.
“While the kids talk with Santa the parents have an opportunity to visit among themselves and enjoy the food,too, added the town clerk.
