The 15th annual Royal Family Reunion was held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in the Assembly Building at the Salemburg Baptist Church in Salemburg. At the conclusion, a memorial service was conducted at the Salemburg Cemetery to remember PVT Martin Royal, an ancestor and Confederate soldier who died in 1863 at the age of 23.

Martin was a member of Company A of the 30th Infantry Regiment. He was buried in an unmarked grave near the field hospital where he died at Weldon Railroad in Halifax County, NC.

A stone was laid in Martin’s memory and placed next to the grave of his brother, Whitney Royal, Jr. Whitney also served in the Confederacy and rode with the famous cavalry commander, J.E.B. Stuart. At the close of the ceremony, Confederate reenactors fired muskets in unison as a salute in Martin’s honor.
