Although Midway’s JV boys started off slow in their home game against Princeton, they picked up steam as the game progressed, eventually handing the Bulldogs a sound 73-21 thumping.
Raider coach Matthew Creech said he wasn’t pleased with the team’s first-half play, but saw great things from the young men when they came back from the break.
He blamed part of their early sluggishness on the loss of Andre Sankey who was called up to the varsity, leaving a position adjustment for the younger Midway team.
“There was a period of adjustment for sure, but really I thought it was more a case of playing lazy basketball. We were just unfocused,” Creech said.
Midway led by only 3, 13-10, at the end of the first quarter but they broke it open in the second period, going into the half up 33-14.
“Our best effort was in the second half,” Creech pointed out. “We played with more intensity and we were certainly more focused, and it showed on the scoreboard.”
By the end of the third quarter, the Raiders were up 51-20.
“We were able to play all 10 of our guys and they all made a contribution,” Creech stressed, noting that he saw better ball handling as the night progressed.
“We shot better in the second half; in the first two periods we had a lot of missed opportunities, missed layups.
Jamarrious Baggett led scoring for the JV with 17 points. Tyler Mayes , Terrace Smith and Shayheim Small had 10 a piece; Cameron Hobbs, 7; Ayden Cannady and J.D. Lockamy contributed 6 each; Tyler Warren, 4; Matt Core, 2; and Larry Blanks, 1.
The win moves Midway’s JV to 4-1 on the young season. They host South Johnston Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. game.
