The Princeton Bulldogs made a sweep of the Hobbton Wildcats in Wednesday night’s high school basketball action, taking all three games.
The Wildcat JV played Princeton to a 47-47 tie in regulation only to lose it 57-50 in the OT. Tyler Gray led the JV effort with 14 points and Collie King chipped in another 10.
Wildcat coach Alphonso Hooper said, “The boys played hard. We took it to overtime. We missed a layup at the end and that sent it into overtime. Layups and free throws are two things you have to have to win. My hats off to the guys; they didn’t give up.”
The girls kept it close but just couldn’t hang on for the home victory. They lost 44-33. Hobbton would get a couple of buckets but Princeton would get 3 or 4 more.
Hooper said, “It just wasn’t our night. We probably shot only 20 percent. We just couldn’t make any baskets. It seems like we started slow. We played some man to man and that gave them a little trouble. We just have to go back to the drawing board and work on our coverage. We have to execute our offense better.”
Sasha Martin had 14 points, 5 steals and 3 assists. Michaela Wilson added 7 points, 4 steals and 3 assists.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs won 49-40 although late in the third quarter, and again in the fourth, the Wildcats had cut the lead to 3 points a couple of times. Princeton had a 3-point lead after one at 10-7. At the end of the third quarter, Princeton had a 1-point lead at 30-29
Wildcat coach Jeff Byrd said, “We started sluggish on offense. With the score 23-16 at the half, we were still in it. I think we played the third quarter as good as we have. In the fourth, I think we lost our legs on defense and they were able to stretch it out. We were up 3 in the fourth quarter but we just got tired. They have a good basketball team. We just have find a way to score.”
Jonathan Faison led the Wildcat effort with 14 points.
