The Hobbton Wildcats swept the North Duplin Rebels in Friday night’s prep basketball game. The JV won 40-35, the girls took a 65-15 win while the boys led most of the game taking home a 51-35 win.
Girls’ coach Alphonso Hooper said, “We had a good effort out of everyone tonight. We worked on two things yesterday: boxing out and rebounding and playing man-to-man. We still need to make some adjustments as for doing the little things. We have had trouble hitting shots, but tonight they worked for us. Some of the girls are gaining confidence. Overall I’m pleased with the effort but we still have a lot of work to do. We had a good game out of Michaela Wilson with 26 points and Sasha Martin with 23 points. Those two girls are out leaders and as long as they are scoring, we are going to win some ball games.”
In addition to their points, Wilson had 10 steals and Martin had 12 steals.
In the night cap, the Wildcats and the Rebels started out trading the lead for the first five minutes or so. Then the Wildcats turned it on and began to pull away. The score after one was 10-7, Hobbton. The Wildcats outscored the Rebels 13-8 in the second and moved on from there. In the third, the Wildcats had a 25-point lead at one point.
North Duplin had a horrible third quarter. The Wildcats outscored them 15-3 to take a commanding lead. North Duplin never quit, however.
Wildcat coach Jeff Byrd commented after the game, “I thought we played pretty good. We ran a lot of junk defense to try and trap them and force them out of their offense. Offensively, we art still struggling. We probably shot about 30% from the free-throw line. It was a little better performance tonight than last week. I had to discipline a few players and I think that may have jumped-started them. Like I said, any time you beat North Duplin, it’s a good win.”
Leading the Wildcat scoring effort was Jonathan Faison with 11. Jamal Bell and D. Farrior added 10 each.
On the JV win, Hooper said, “We played hard. It’s all about finishing now. We had them up by 12 and I told them that North Duplin was going to make a run. They started hitting some 3’s and we got lackadaisical and not covering the three. They had some big shots down the stretch. We still have to work on covering your area in the zone and knowing where the shooter is. Overall, I am pleased with the effort.”
The JV scoring was led by T. Grey with 15 points, M. Surles with 10 and H. Britt with 7.
