The Lady Dark Horses showed their defensive dominance and then some when the 2A team traveled to 1A Spartan country on Friday. Union never made it into double figures, with the final score a dismal 8-72.

“We pretty much put them away in the first quarter,” Clinton head coach Chris Owens stated matter-of-factly. “Our pressure defense gave them a lot of problems. We rebounded really good, too, but our defense was the key.”

At the end of the first quarter, Union made one basket to Clinton’s 26. At the half, the score was 7-54. Union made one basket during the entire second half and the final score was 8-72.

Clinton’s first half defense forced over 30 turnovers. Their full-court press was an obvious problem for the inexperienced Spartans who are mostly underclassmen.

Union’s Coach English said after the game that his team would be better later on in the season, and he stressed that they were very inexperienced. “Clinton’s very good, I mean they’re really good” the coach concluded. The Lady Spartans host East Bladen next Tuesday.

Top scorers for Clinton were Courtney Pearsall and Kristin Glasper, each with 16 points; Bianca Owens scored 13; Lexus Simpson, 12; Tiandra Johnson, 6; DeAsia Edwards, 4; Janaya Saunders, 3; and Jessica Bell scored 2 points.

This brings Clinton’s record to 4-2 and they host Wallace-Rose Hill next Wednesday. Union will host East Bladen next Tuesday.
